Blade Runner

Week 1 - Thursday

Summery of film
By the year 2019, humans have created genetically engineered replicants which are basically humans who were designed for entertainment and labour purposes. However, they are now illegal on earth! In America, a Blade Runner, Rick Deckard is summoned back to the force as 4 replicants have made it to earth and need taking care of. It continues to tell the story of how the 4 replicants what to extend the four year life span and will clearly do anything to get what they want.

Music
The first thing that come to mind when the film starts is the music. It almost gives you a feel for the film and what the story is about before it has even begun. The music that continues throughout the film aims to further enhance the futuristic theme and technology and almost makes it feel magical.

Background information
The typed information that scrolls up the screen in the opening titles helps the viewer understand the background of the film and how the replicants came about in the first place.

Characters

Deckard: Deckard is the main character in the film as he has to take up his old job as a Blade runner in order to catch some escaped replicants. At first he is unwilling to cooperate with the authorities but it soon becomes clear that he is going to have to take the job. Throughout the film you get to see many different sides to this character. For most, he is portrayed as a very strong, motivated and clever person as in the end he manages to get rid of all the replicants. However, you get to see a side of him which shows his authority over Rachael as he forces her to say things such as 'Kiss me' and 'I want you'!
Favourite quote: 'Replicants are like any other machine, they're either a benefit or a hazard. If they're a benefit, it's not my problem'.

Rachael: Rachael is somewhat of a weak character within the film compared to the other main parts. At first she does not know that she is a replicant but gains this knowledge as the film continues. Her timid voice and vulnerability almost makes you feel sorry for her.
Favourite quote: 'I'm not in the business...I am the business'.

Roy Batty: The first time we see batty you can instantly tell that he is the leader of the 6 replicants, holding a lot of authority over them. Throughout the film, his character possibly becomes the scariest with his haunting eyes and what feels like a never ending chase around the building.
Favourite quote: 'Now its my turn! I'm going to give you a few seconds before I come. 1, 2...'

Pris: Pris leads you to believe that she is just a harmless, lonely character but quickly manipulates J.F Sebastian into letting her stay with him for the night. Instantly you can see through her change in expression and the look in her eyes that she is up to no good. As the film progresses, her character become more crazy and creepy to look at with the makeup on her face and the ability to defend herself.
Favourite quote: 'We need you Sebastian, your our best and only friend!'

Blade runner is considered one of the most famous and influential science fiction films ever made and has pathed that way to many futuristic films over the years. For me, watching Blade Runner for the second time gave me the opportunity to study the characters and the many aspects of the film.
In my opinion, the film starts of fairly slow but become a lot more interesting as Batty and Pris open up to J.F Sabastion about there want for a longer life but the best scene is when Batty is chasing Deckard by far.
